Here we have the rather interesting DVD sales ranking for 2008 anime, in this case focused on the first volume as a proxy for total popularity. There are a number of interesting results within the list, but the top and bottom are likely not surprising.
These numbers are the number of DVDs sold over the period specified. All titles mentioned are the first volume unless otherwise stated:
39,251 コードギアスR2 / Code Geass R2 (7 weeks)
F / Macross F (6 weeks)
14,520 ARIA The ORIGINATION (1 month)
Strike Witches LE (3 weeks)
Toshokan Sensou (4 weeks)
Junjou Romantica LE (1 month)
Hakaba Kitarou (1 month)
10,367 To LOVEるドキ×2エディション / To Love-Ru (1 month)
Soul Eater (1 month)

3,926 D.C.II S.S. (限定版) / Da Capo Season 2 LE (First week)
The Tower of Druaga (2 weeks)
Chi’s Sweet Home LE (First week)
REVOLUTION / Slayers Revolution (First week)
Kamen no Maid Guy LE (First week)
2,869 true tears (First week)
The top slots won’t surprise anyone, and for that matter nor will the bottom (Kamen no Maid Guy), although Slayers fans will depressed by the doom such results spell for future Slayers titles.
There are a few non-mainstream anime in there, such as yaoi anime Junou, or the various children’s anime such as Kanokon and GeGeGe no Kitarou, but it seems the vast majority are in conformance with ratings and critical reception.
The fact that some titles only have a few weeks to accumulate sales is significant, but it should be noted that most titles see the vast majority of their sales in the first week, so this is not a huge factor.

LE is that magical label you attach to a DVD to make it sell better.
I went head-to-head with (formerly) Bandai Visual USA over the need for them to sell high-priced, single-languaged animu.
People had been complaining about the high prices per episode count. I've been complaining about the fact that the titles were of only one audio language (which already felt cheap despite the high prices).
And now a couple of their titles are being sold in boxsets for "reasonable" prices. (While Funimation is kicking their rear ends, btw.)
The joke's punchline: Now that's what I call "True Tears." *RIMSHOT*
Nice to see Aria the Origination so high up :)
That Kitarou was the adultish noitamina one, wasn't it?
Wow, seems like Gonzo's strategy for Strike Bitches came out well.
BTW, the CC pic is hot. Who's the artist?
no wonder code geass is on top

Aria....*sigh* we will miss thee.
Kanokon is children's anime? Uhh...
Well, it looks like the rom-coms better kick it up a notch to compete with the "serious anime".

Have you not heard?
waht does LE mean?
Lawful Evil.
It's disappointing that quality efforts like True Tears (immensely popular on 2ch too) and Shigofumi don't sell, while the public eats up Kanokon/To Love-Ru/Rosario/Tsukaima. Fan service fluff pays, especially in light of dropping DVD sales across the board.
The trend for upcoming anime should be obvious.
Has it not always been thus?
Yes, but looking at the figures from 2003 to now, the sales disparity (original vs licensed property, straight adaptation vs drastically modified formula) has gotten much worse by the year.
Code Geass is overvalued
I guess the low sales of True Tears, Shigofumi may be why it was so easy for Bandai to license them (and now True Tears is getting an awfully budget R1 release).
4 to last should be Chi's Sweet Home though I wonder what it would be like it was a block of cheese instead of a cat. I still do enjoy telling my friend that Strike Witvhes is quite a hot seller.
Corrected... Thanks. That one caught me off guard!
Nice to see Toshokan Sensou up there.
