Still, people question why such a thing exists? I think people need to factor that Japan likes to make money, no matter how niche that market may be as long as it makes money. I'm not supporting this BTW but I am stating what is probably the truth.

Sheesh, some here make it sound as though this kind of thing was a Japan only thing. But children in bikinis are not Japan only, and perhaps in fact Japan is actually "trailing behind" here. There are lots of legal non-nude "child model" sites, one of the largest perhaps being magazine fashion (not giving direct link, should be easy enough to find for those who feel the need to verify).

Whether this is really healthy is one thing, and perhaps the Japanese build more of a "stardom" around it, but saying "Japan is going too far" suggests you are merely not aware of much the same going on elsewhere.

If I remember right, Aya Ueto is now a soap opera star.

AND- some of the girl idols that you see are really in there late teens and early 20's. They just look 16. A good friend is married to an Okinawan girl. Still looks 18.. She turns 39 this year.

I'm usually very tolerable about many things about Japan, but this goes over the line. I'm ashamed of all the people involved. Though on a side thought, she seems to be happy...for now...

Not so sick, in my country happenned almost the same. A little girl was turned in a pop star, and after that comes the saying of how exploiters were the parents and the managers. Anyway, she took a very good rest of this career so she can live lke a normal child.

The actual video/photo shoots themselves for the ones this young are harmless, no more stressful than any other child acting job. Any "damage" she might suffer is going to come later, once she hits puberty and realizes "omg my mom made me act in pedo videos :(" so it's more of a social thing. I don't know exactly how big of a worry that should be--I'll have to leave figuring that out to child psychologists and people smarter than me.

It's interesting that the comments on the Japanese article are kind of similar to the comments here. Having seen Little Miss Sunshine, and thinking of Jon-Benet Ramsay, maybe the American analog of this -- the preteen talent/beauty contest -- is not really so different.

There's an article in Newsweek [http://www.newsweek.com/id/162792] about the "pornification of a generation" that talks about how little kids are imitating styles that used to be used mainly by porn stars. It would be interesting to know just what effect this has on kids in later life. If it all seems normal to them, maybe they are less damaged than if people make a huge fuss. Or maybe not.
