Fans of the Nintendo DS will be excited to learn of the upcoming new model, set to include a camera and music player (able to record music from CDs and the like), and improved memory card and wireless networking capabilities. A larger screen is also promised.
It is to go sale before the year is out, at a price of ¥16,800.
This marks the most significant revision in the four years since the hugely popular handheld was released, and looks to be an interesting move by Nintendo, expanding as it does the platform’s capabilities into areas typically the preserve of dedicated devices and mobile phones.
It remains to be seen whether they will attempt to push the DS into new markets, but this would seem a logical next step (for example, an iTunes like service).
The most probable game related use of the camera functionality looks to be including photographs in games as avatars and the like, though how appealing this will be remains to be seen.

On another note, expect a new reign of terror…

Damn, it’s really been 4 years?
CD playback?
W-What?
That wasn’t worded too well - it is supposed to be able to record music from CDs and play them back. It’s not clear whether this is just by mic or whether there will be a proper port.
By the looks of it you could also rip onto memory with a PC and use that in the DS, assuming they allow it.
So… it would probably be something like an mp3 player? This would probably mean the speakers will be better quality right?
They must be, surely. I expect they have plans to use the enhanced networking to hook it into a content network for selling music or videos or what have you.
A better screen, better sound, more memory, and proper WAN access - it would make perfect sense.
yup, i hope the speakers will be better, too .-.
Lol upskirt capabilities xD
Remember this is still only rumour. Nintendo haven;t even responded yet.
Nikkei does not casually post rumours - it has high credibility even as a “rumour”. I’d worry more over the details…
I’d buy that game! XD
