Comment on Aya Hirano Grossly Obese, Vows to Cut Flab by hashihime:

She wants to get rid of that little paunch, perhaps. Many young stars have a tendency to eating disorders and fixation on food. That’s what comes of knowing that people are always staring at your body. In fact, most seiyuu have had posts something like this in their blogs. I don’t think it means much. As long as she keeps up her strength with fish (easy to do in Japan) all will be well. Don’t want her to go back to the days when she collapsed, in late 2006, and embarked on a diet to build up her strength. Anyway, even a full vegetarian diet can be perfectly healthy.

No matter how much people make fun of her, she not only gets her own TV show, but she attracts streams of comments to this blog. That clip is three years old, from when she was 18. She does know some English and was probably perfectly well aware of what the button said. She likes what she conceives of as hard rock. Avril Lavigne appears to be a favorite. Suburban rebel. What is her real voice? Like many actors, I don’t think she has one. She speaks a lot lower and more seriously on the NHK …

You have a perfectly valid point of view, and one that is shared widely. I just happen to disagree. For me, the consistent use of, as I said, a strong version of the technique, actually works brilliantly. It gives a realistic feeling to the settings that simpler drawing and occasional use wouldn’t have. I felt transported to the streets of Tokyo by some of the scenes. And for me, the contrast between the simplified animation and the rich backgrounds works beautifully. It is in part a money …

On this show, I agree with you completely. I have said, rather hopefully, for months now that Yamakan (the director) is a comic genius. Now I think I may have been right. Godly animation with constant perfect comic touches.

[rant from a lover of Summer Skies]Now that two favored anime are using the same technique, I see that you can only spin the opprobrium for Summer Skies as having been because its use of the technique was “excessive.” The use in Summer Skies was aesthetically powerful. People say they want new things in anime, but when something really new (consistent use of a rich version of this technique) comes along, they reject it.[/rant] Love your blog. Disagree with some of your opinions.

  • Kemeko Parody & Service: Zetsubou + Clannad:
Episode two turned me off this show. I enjoyed episode one, but maybe that was enough of this kind of crazy humor. They tried to beef up references to other anime, but that just felt forced to me. For me, Kyou no Go no Ni’s excessively long sequences ended up going on long enough to start working again.
