Actually after the Meiji restauration these 'shunga arts' has been banned...( Don't forget, the westernization of the country meant also the 'christianization' of it...)
But they were highly popular in the Edo - era parallel to the ukiyo-e arts...Actually a lot of ukiyo-e masters did shunga as well :P And shunga arts also contained 'yaoi' and bisexual themes XD
The term 'shunga' itself comes from the Meiji era, but in the past several words were used :
makura-e (枕絵 pillow pictures), warai-e (笑い絵 pictures to laugh) or tsugai-e (番い絵 kopulation pictures )
