Finally got round to viewing the recent first 俗・さよなら絶望先生/Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei DVD - good as ever, but pun fatigue soon sets in for me.
These parts are carried off well as always.
Perry can open anything.
As usual there are a vast number of puns and literarily expressed humour… I’m not such a great fan of puns (though these are undeniably good) whether in English or Japanese, and the split second bursts of text are annoying (pause or ignore… I’m now leaning to ignore) but the visual side of things is carried off gorgeously enough to compensate for the long lists of homophones.
I think maybe reading the manga would be a more rewarding way of approaching the wordplay, but the unique visual style of the anime is captivating.
1日と旧… I will admit this part was amusing in the end.
I do not envy anyone trying to render this intelligible to non-Japanese speakers. At any rate, the visual quality alone makes it easy to recommend.
